Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in utilizing replay technology.
Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Competitors will gain the ability to challenge particular decisions from the chair umpire, echoing the protocol already in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This development comes just a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year role of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, including:
- Whether a ball has bounced twice.
- If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
- Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.
Notably, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.
A Recent Example
A recent case took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.
The British player admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.
Additional Innovations
Another change at The Championships this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.
In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
