Around 50 vehicles have been covered with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to law enforcement.
Automobiles, walls and mailboxes were marked, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they reported in a official communication.
Law enforcement say they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a man noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a reddish fluid.
The substance had been placed in the pattern of a banned symbol, they added.
Police then located numerous other smeared vehicles and house walls in the nearby vicinity.
Swastikas are banned in Germany under legislation banning the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Police report preliminary tests suggest the substance was probably blood from a person.
"At present there remains no indication as to its source; authorities are presently not cognizant of any harm in relation with the event," they stated.
City officials announced they were attempting "to unravel the mystery" and have asked to the public for information.
An important representative commented the attack left him speechless and required to be solved rapidly.
"This event hits the core of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the extremist attack five years ago," he wrote on a platform, referring to the murder of nine people by a assailant targeting residents of migrant background in 2020.
