Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them entered the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend floated over the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and near the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that such operations become unprofitable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Parallel situations in nearby states have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
