The renowned publisher has welcomed a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to lead the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently working on the upcoming over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as Project Ethos.
Management Shift Comes After Mixed Feedback
Brinkman assumes the role of studio head at 31st Union following the dismissal of previous head Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to the game's lackluster early showing last autumn.
On Wednesday, the company's top executive David Ismailer informed employees about this decision through an internal memo, which emphasized that early feedback sessions had indicated the need for a clearer vision.
The president noted that the team is now refining Project Ethos with a renewed focus, aiming to better meet player expectations.
Trend of Key Hires
This announcement mirrors a similar step taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they recruited an industry veteran from Blizzard to contribute to the beloved franchise development group.
Below is the full content from the president's communication:
Dear Team—
I know you all just finished your gathering - I hope you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the recent updates. Previously I sent you all a update, I stated the following: “I believe in this group. You all are some of the most driven and talented developers we have had the opportunity to partner with - and we’re looking forward for that collaboration to continue.”
With your dedication and versatility, especially over the past twelve months, you repeatedly show that.
The community feedback from last autumn’s Project ETHOS demo was enlightening. It affirmed the appeal of a action-packed game but made clear we still had improvements to make. It highlighted the requirement for a more distinct identity.
The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve advanced. You took the criticism to mind and overhauled Project ETHOS with a renewed vision - one that’s poised to deliver on its potential to our players.
Our confidence in Project ETHOS grows every day. To advance the outstanding development you’ve made, I am thrilled to introduce Ben Brinkman as the new Director of the team. Following several months of talks, he starts with us on next week.
Ben’s management and expertise in the PVP shooter field is vast, having spent the last 15 years producing and overseeing some of the most recognizable series in gaming, for example the acclaimed shooter, and lately, the battle royale hit.
Let’s together in receiving Ben next week. We are all eager to continue seeing the development of Project ETHOS in the time to come.
The President

Title Information and Vision
Project Ethos was revealed in October 2024 in conjunction with a early access event. At the time, the developers described the game as a "no-cost, third-person perspective action-packed experience and an thrilling advancement on the genre."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in live gameplay to fit your unique tactics," the description states. "Challenge the opponents with fresh skills, challenges, and challenges that change every match. Do you leave securely with your collected items? Or aim high, risk it all, and pray your squad can achieve the highest spot? The option is in your hands."
Project Ethos lacks an official launch window or platforms, but players can expect additional details as production continues.
